Simple Ways to Detect Adulteration in Edible oil

Edible oils are a widely used food category in Indian households. A massive surge in edible oils and other Indian Grocery consumption rates is seen, especially around the festive seasons. Coupled with increasing population growth is leading to increasing tremendous product demand. The rising products demand across the country is simultaneously increasing adulteration in the products. Which leads to associated with several severe diseases. Therefore, awarding yourself, especially in the food items which are directly linked to your health. Edible oils are categorized into two major categories, first, the oil extracted from animals is called animal-extracted edible oil, which is extracted from animals. Coconut oil, palm oil, and olive oil are certain plant extracted oil examples. 

Adulteration practice done in edible oils

Edible oils get adulterated, performing the different methods and oil mixing. Two different types of edible oils are mixed, and low-cost oil is further sold at high prices. Another adulterated method is the mixing of nonedible oils, like mineral oils with edible oils which leads to adverse effects on human health. This is a major concern, hence, we should be aware of the product’s adulterants. And helps you to save from eating contaminated and adulterated food. 

Awareness is important, thus we are mentioning some home tricks and methods to detect adulterants in edible oils. 

  • Check adulterated coconut oil

Pour coconut oil into the transparent glass

Put into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes, make sure to not keep it in the freezer

Coconut oil will start to solidify, and if coconut oil is adulterated then other oil layers get separated. 

  • Check adulterated mustard oil

There are two methods and tricks to test the edible oil quality, primarily, the freezing and the second is rubbing test. 

Take one cup of mustard oil, and out into the refrigerator for at least 2-3 hours. If oil gets frozen with some white in it, this reflects, that it contains some adulterants. 

Secondly, for the rubbing test, take a bit of mustard oil, and rub over your palms, if you start to feel some chemical smell or color traces. This reflects the presence of certain adulteration in edible oil. 

  • Check adulterated olive oil

Pour 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil into a transparent jar, and seal it properly

Then put into a refrigerator for 24 hours

If it gets solidified, that means it is unsaturated and pure

But if it remains in a liquid state, this reflects it contains some adulterants within the olive oil. 

Certain methods are required to know the presented adulterants.

Several techniques are adopted to detect the adulterants present in edible oils. This includes certain methods called, chromatography, coupling method, and saponification method.
